European Private Law

University of Southampton Chair in EU Law
Ius Commune

Welcome to the European Private Law Homepage, hosted by the Chair in EU Law at the University of Southampton, School of Law.

This Web site provides a starting point for legal research on European private law. It contains original material in the form of a comprehensive overview of all secondary Community law relevant to private law scholars and practitioners (see below “Legislation”) as well as an introduction to the most relevant ECJ cases to date, the Muñoz case, and the already quite extensive follow-up case law on Francovich. In addition, the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive is covered in detail as this is a significant piece of legislation in the European private law field.

The second objective of these pages is to bring together other Web resources in the field of European private law, in particular the work carried out by colleagues at the European University Institute, the Dutch Research School Ius Commune and the Casebooks Project.

in Legislation: Protection of Geographical Indicators and Designations of Origin Regulation; the Reinsurance Directive; the Regulation on compulsory licensing of patents for export to countries with public health problems; the Agreements with Denmark on the Brussels I Regulation and the service of Documents Regulation; the 2006 updates on the Hague Programme; damages for breach of EC law; the recast Equal Treatment Directive (2006/54/EC).
